Noon Hour Diving |
|
|
Went for a little dive in the Lake this noon hour, 4 Oct 03............. It took me a little longer to get into all my neoprene than I expected - 2mil shorty, with my 2pc 7mil overtop, and my brand-new hood and gloves too. Discovered the gloves are a weeny bit big (long) so I'll have to try not to use the fingertips. Water was what I'd call crystal-clear - vis between 20 and 30 feet horizontally - and hardly a breath of wind. Bright sunshine beating down and making patterns with the ripples on the bottom some 20 feet down. Bothered some big fishies. Practiced clearing mask & snorkel - I have a new "scuba" snorkel with a flexible hose that swings it out of the way of the reg. And it's NOT a "dry" snorkel so it will be good for me to practice on. Wearing that much neoprene is certainly an enlightening experience. For one thing, I was wearing 15lbs of lead and was still waaaaaay too buoyant. I know I want to be buoyant as a freediver but corklike was not my intention. So I didn't get to actually dive as I had wanted to. I also discovered that the hood and gloves DO make all the difference - it felt like bathwater! And wearing the 2mil shorty underneath did indeed take up just enough room to prevent the "water flowing through my suit" sensation I get from my 2pc 7mil being one size too large. And I gave myself a "bubble head" practicing mask clears - I guess there's a reason that my pool buddy Tuesday night was suggesting to me about pulling out the bottom of the mask during a mask clear instead of just holding the top against my face. Another thing I discovered about neoprene is that it takes more energy to move through the water wearing that much. I wasn't exactly huffing and puffing, (I don't let myself get my breathing out of control), but my legs sure felt it and I could hear my heart pumping extra hard! (the other reason I didn't dip below the surface - my metabolism was up with the exertion) And when I finally returned to shore where I'd parked my truck I wrangled my gloves off first then my fins, and was surprised at how cold the water actually was! (I can guess what you're thinking - just wait until she tries a drysuit!!!) I climbed back into my uniform, rearranged the lake hair - I'm going to be in the pool tonight anyway, so no point in washing it out - and headed back to the office. Oh that was soooo FUN!!! I don't know why I didn't think of it sooner!!!!! (My supervisor has already told me he really doesn't care what I do with my lunch hours as long as I'm back in the office on time) |
